Biography

Prof. Daniel Oppong-Sekyere (PhD) is an Associate Professor of Crop Sciences (Plant Breeding/Agronomy) with the Department of Ecological Agriculture, Bolgatanga Technical University, Ghana. Before his assumption of duty as a Lecturer, Daniel worked as an Assistant Agricultural Officer/District Development Officer with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA).
Prof. Oppong-Sekyere has extensive knowledge and skills in the field of agricultural extension, education, research, baseline & endline surveys, monitoring & evaluation, agribusiness, food & nutrition security management, rural/livelihood change, youth empowerment & gender mainstreaming programmes. He has carried out various baseline/endline research/extension training, monitoring and evaluation programmes and education on good agronomic and general crop production practices, participatory farmer breeding/selection/evaluation, crop storage and marketing, food and nutrition security and rural development, agribusiness and innovation, postharvest technologies, Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPDM) practices, warehouse management, vegetable production practices, and youth enterprise development activities for Farmer-Based Organizations (FBOs) and other stakeholders in the agriculture value chain in several communities in the Brong, Ahafo, Eastern, Upper East, Northern and Ashanti Regions of
Ghana.
Daniel has additionally carried out research projects on drought and disease tolerance of crops, climate change, climate resilience practices, food and nutrition security and rural/livelihood change and youth empowerment/ development activities and programmes, baseline and endline surveys as well as monitoring and evaluation programmes for several rural and urban farmers, households and communities in some regions of Ghana, the United States of America, Israel and the Netherlands. He has attended many international conferences, workshops and courses in the field of agriculture, food and nutrition security and its related disciplines.
Prof. Oppong-Sekyere had been an Associate Consultant for ‘Nathan Associates’ under the MADE program in Ghana on market assessment of onion and other vegetables in the Upper East Region. He had also been a Project Coordinator for the GSOP Mango Project funded by the World Bank and the Government of Ghana/Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) at the Pru District of the Brong region of Ghana, a Resource Person and Facilitator for the Ghana Skills Development Fund (GSDF) in collaboration with the Bolgatanga Technical University, Field Expert and Peer Educator for the Millennium Villages Project at selected districts of the Ashanti region of Ghana, Programme Expert and Facilitator for skill, entrepreneurship and leadership training of young girls and women in agricultural science and engineering under the Campaign for Female Education (CAMFED) and Women in Economic Empowerment-Northern Region (WEE-NORTH)
programmes funded by the MasterCard and Alinea (Global Affairs Canada) Foundations, and has been appointed the Programme Coordinator/Faculty Advisor for the Kosmos Innovation Centre (KIC) – to drive agricultural innovation and agribusiness among females and the youth in general across the northern regions of Ghana.
Daniel is currently undertaking studies on the theme; ‘Enhancing Food Security and Income among Small Holder Farmers through Participatory Selection, Evaluation, Marketing and Promotion of Groundnuts, Cowpea and Bambara beans. Daniel is married to Joyce, and the couple is blessed with a set of twins, Adom and Nhyira.
