About the Department

The Department of Agricultural Engineering is under the School of Engineering. It is a branch of engineering which is concerned with the design, construction and improvement of farming equipment and machinery. Agricultural Engineers apply engineering principles to solve agricultural problems.

Agricultural Engineering has several components including Soil and Water Engineering, Mechanisation and Machinery Engineering, Food and Postharvest Engineering and Agro-Environmental and Biological Systems Engineering.

The Department runs Competency-Based Training (CBT) programmes: Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelor of Technology (BTech) in Agricultural Engineering. The main purpose of the Department is to train students to have the requisite competencies to contribute to the development of the agricultural sector of the economy of Ghana. 

Specialisations/Majors

For the Higher National Diploma (HND) Agricultural Engineering, students do no specialize in any of the options. However, students who enrol for the Bachelor of Technology (BTech) are required to choose one of the following options for specialisation:

  1. Soil and Water Engineering
  2. Mechanization and Machinery Engineering
  3. Food and Postharvest Engineering

Job Opportunities

Though self-employment is our main goal, graduates of the programme may also find job opportunities in the following sectors:

  1. Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs),
  2. The private sector such as irrigation companies, NGOs, banks, private farms, haulage companies, automobile garages, automobile retail outlets, and the mining sector,
  3. Agro-food processing industries and
  4. Teaching and Research Institutions.
